But as a power supply would idle constantly consume energy, I rejected this solution. I have long experimented with solar power, so I decided, now a solar system for our toilets to build. On the flat roof of our garage I installed two 12V – 55Wp – solar – modules (Conrad Electronics). This I switched in parallel.”

I had gone to buy some long wires at a electrician shop, when a terminal box had to be tested, he used a continuity tester.

When i used to buy electrical parts in the past, they used a tester box, made of wood. This had a bulb and a tubelight starter and two long wires (230v AC). The Continuity tester would light up a 40w lamp. Now he had a LED based one, so i got one for myself.

All it had, was two small cells in a plastic box with a LED, i was just flashing the LED as it looked nice thru the transparent box, it failed. The LED had burnt, the battery used. This product was not for monkeying around.

Now i performed a tiny design upgrade, I used a extra-bright 3mm Red LED with a 47 ohm resistor. Now it is robust, at least for continuity. The battery life can be good only if you make quick checks.

Improvements –

More protection may be needed to avoid damage to LED when this tester is applied across a battery by mistake. LED can flash to save battery power, one SMD – LM339 can be used for flashing and a more efficient short-leakage detector. A small oscillator with a neon may be more efficient and bright. This can also double up as a hidden Live wire or Mains AC detector.

Can someone provide me a (simple) schematic for a dimmer that would control 12 VAC about 80 watts. This would be used to control a lamp with halogen bulbs.

This is a phase angle control of a Triac which is a evolution from an SCR. The 50 Hz or 60 Hz Sine wave of mains can be turned on at any point after the Zero Crossing

Triac based Lamp Dimmer power control

The Voltage ramps up in the sine wave which gives a near “Linear” slope which can be used to trigger the ON at a time delay after zero crossing when the voltage is zero. This is like a PWM but works on low frequency only. Some of the early SMPS(HV for TV and Mains Inverter) by Siemens were built around SCRs. Turning off a SCR is a difficult job for a designer, MOSFETS and IGBT are now used for PWM drive stages.

You can use it with a bulb to vary brightness of bulb, this is a live circuit it can give a shock, enclose in plastic box, the pot should have a plastic knob, use a fuse, you can also use it for temperature control of soldering irons.

Mains Voltage Stabilizer Circuits

These circuits were drawn for a person in Africa. See the thread here… stabilizer circuit. They were not tested by me, but are quite close to a practical design.

Stabilizer Step up 230V AC 500VA

This circuit is a design i did, not tested by me as yet. It can Stabilize Mains voltage to around +/- 10% . It can be used for both 110V AC or 220V AC inputs with modifications. The Output is 220V AC. There is an overload, under voltage and over voltage trip circuit. With some tweaks and modifications it might work.

Solid-State Stabilizer Step up 110V AC

This circuit is a design concept, not tested by me and i did it just to explain some ideas. The circuit uses opto-coupler MOC3041 of Motorola and the Triac BTA-16-600 of ST as a solid state switch or relay. It also uses the LM324 quad opamp from National Semiconductor which is low power and single supply. As the MOC3041 switches the Triac at zero crossover there is no inter-winding short of transformer on crossover hopefully, the control circuit is designed in such a way that more than one triac will not be turned on at a time, i would like you to give feedback.

Mains Adapter Converts 230V AC 50 Hz to Rectified DC which replaces a Battery Pack. It was also called Battery Eliminator by older generations as it was used to save Battery Cost in AM Radios.

The most important product safety aspect is the transformer, may it be well isolated, may it use a split bobbin, may it have a visible insulation between primary and secondary. May the thin primary wires not slip into the secondary .. when not using split core. Use a Layer to layer insulation for better safety. Use a nice laminated thin sheet alloy core stack, then no hum and no heat. vacuum impregnate magnetics. May the customer be safe and sound.

Remember only if we keep a customer alive, he will buy more products. From medicines to transport, from bread to gadgets. The customer is the most valuable asset. If he is kept Alive and Healthy and in a Cheerful mood … He will Buy !!
